Born in the Shadow Marches in the village of Blackroot with the name Krashnak’aashta, Cur can recall little of his earliest years. At a very young age he was captured by mercenary raiders, his parents supposedly killed. The boy was strong and healthy, so they kept the boy as a slave. When asked what his name was the frightened boy could only stutter “Krrr…” and so the merc Captain laughingly named him “Cur”. While abused and neglected at first, the boy soon showed strength and wit and one of the mercenaries, a Corporal from Karnaath by the name Ormeli “Orm” Ottinger saw within the boy a likeness of the son he’d lost at a similar age. The corporal took the boy under his wing.
It was Orm Ottinger who first noticed the boy’s dragonmark (The Mark of Finding) on his back. While he knew that this meant the boy’s destiny was beyond him, he was already so fond of the lad that he could not give him up. He went to enourmous effort to keep the Mark a secret.
And so Cur was trained in combat and tactics, taught literacy and history, and flourished under the guidance of the Corporal. Even before he came of age the mercenary band benefitted greatly from Cur’s tactical advice, and eventually Orm became the captain of his own band, with Cur at his side. “Orm’s Eagles” they were called, a band of infiltrators and skirmishers that turned many a battle, and for a time seemed unbeatable. But Orm could not defeat Destiny…
There came a fateful battle where Cur’s unit was cut off from the rest of his force by a paricularly powerful force of Liondrake’s Roar monstrous mercenaries. As a unit of skirmishers, Cur’s soldiers were unable to contend with the superior strength and numbers and so surrendered. Cur was captured and his Mark noticed.
Cur figured it out. Orm had been like a father to Cur all these years and he’d long ago forgiven him for divorcing him from his natural parents, accepting it as an artefact of war. But this deception embittered him severely. He did not seek out or even contact Orm’s Eagles, allowing them to believe he’d been killed or enslaved.
He met with House Tharashk representatives to try and discover his identity. It wasn’t easy, as most of his memories of early childhood had long since faded, but they placed him in the village of Blackroot. So he set off “home” to see if he could find some answers.
Meanwhile, Orm did not give up looking for his surrogate son. He hired a band of adventurers to go looking for Cur (Calden d’Deneith, Keira, Taus Algid, Sari Vylae and her brother Caelin) having caught word that he was headed for Blackroot. Fortunately for Cur, the adventurers did find him, his reunion with his birth parents having been cut short when he was abducted by cultists. Cur was greatful for the rescue, but vehemently refused to be taken back to Orm. After nearly coming to blows over the matter, Cur gave in respecting that they did their job and needed to be paid.
Cur’s reunion with Orm was short and bitter. He told his former Captain that he would not be returning to Orm’s Eagles. He was in a new outfit now…
