Khyber's Gate

Session 5
A quick skirmish...

The heroes are briefly interrupted in their trek out of the Shadow Marches by a hunting pack of drakes. But the tables were quickly turned on the reptiles, and they became lunch instead. Amazing what a little barbecue sauce will do.

Session 4
Back into the light...

The depths of Khyber were not kind to the Chosen of the Gray Mist, but they succeeded in rescuing Cur and his family, as well as other helpless villagers who were fated to become enslaved by the evil in this cavern. The cult of the Dragon Below that followed the daelkyr Belashyrra will no longer terrorize the village of Blackroot. But a strange twist to the tale was added when Sari took the artifact of the followers of the daelkyr, the Coat of Eyes, and put it on her own body after it detached from the orc cult leader Toraash. Who knows what effect this may have on Sari or the world around her?

After some initial disagreement, Cur decided to join the group and return to Sharn to at least collect the reward. But before they could do so, a small cadre of trackers from House Tharask stopped them in the midst of the swamps demanding to take Cur back to their superiors. Refusal led to bloodshed once again…

Session 3
Into Khyber...

The cavern, as well as the wickedness of this cult of the Dragon Below, goes deep. Our heroes never imagined how deep it would go. After interrupting the demented worship service, complete with an aberrant dolgaunt songleader and huge pulsing eye, they journeyed into Khyber itself in search of Cur Ottinger. The trail led to more twisted danger as they fought a group of two-headed goblins, called dolgrim, by a subterranean pond with healing properties. Then they walked into the blackness of Mabar itself when they stumbled into the clutches of a living manifestation of that darkness. Yet all of these challenges fell before their teamwork and skill. Will it hold up until our adventurers find Cur and his family?

Session 2
Into the marshes to find a half-orc...

After meeting with Bren ir’Gadden, our heroes were hired by the nobleman to find a missing member of the Wayfinder Foundation—a half-orc named Cur Ottinger. Apparently he went to the Shadow Marches in search of his birth parents (his real name is Krashnak’aashta). After accepting the job and teleporting to Zarash’ak via an Orien circle, they made their way to Blackroot—the village where Cur is from. But all was not as it seemed in Blackroot. A cult of the Dragon Below has taken hold, and they appear to have kidnapped Cur and his family. The group’s investigations led them to a cave outside the village where they fought four cultists (including one that was ‘enhanced’ by a symbiont). After dispatching them, they began exploring the cave and found sigils throughout, apparently made by the souls of dead cultists. Chanting ahead seems to indicate a fight lies before them…

Session 1
Out of the dead gray mist...

After joining together impromptu to investigate the old tower above the Saerun Road, our heroes rescued a Brelish Lord Major from the clutches of a gang of individuals bearing aberrant dragonmarks. Why they had kidnapped the nobleman was not apparent, and there was little time to learn more as events moved rapidly. The strange runes in the tower proved to be a mark of the Draconic Prophecy which spoke into their minds: “Five stand at the brink of desolation as one against the tempest’s roar.” What is this desolation? The next few minutes may have provided the answer as what came to be known as the Mourning descended upon the nation of Cyre, not a few hundred yards away from them. While the adventurers battled Cyran forces who wished to take the Lord Major, destruction enveloped the country in the wake of the dead-gray mist. A memory they will never forget.

Four years later, they are all assembled again by the same man—this time at his invitation. But before our heroes can get to the nobleman Bren ir’Gadden, they are accosted by one of the men that they rescued that day: ir’Gadden’s aide Aric Blacktree. Apparently the mark of Prophecy etched an aberrant dragonmark on the man—an event that he desired, and even planned. It seems that he arranged for ir’Gadden’s capture in order to escape from the military and to gain the attention of the aberrant House Tarkanan—an organization ever willing to wreak havoc on the power structures in Sharn. Apparently Blacktree was seeking his revenge against the group for their interference in his plans. Luckily, the madman was stopped by their overwhelming force.
