Calden d’Deneith, 22 Years, 75 Days Old on the Day of Mourning
Calden was born in Rekkenmark on Vult 1, 971, with Vult ascendant. His parents had high hopes for their second child, born late in life. His only sibling, a sister named Lynessa, was twelve years his elder, and already proving to be an asset to the House. Calden’s parents were disappointed, however, when their son proved to be without a mark. Despite this, his parents raised him well, with all the benefits minor nobility of House Deneith might expect.
Calden, however, had a love for the more martial aspects of House Deneith, viewing the blademarks and marshals as great heroes in his youth. Despite their fears that his pursuit of such a career would end in his death, his parents did not hold him back. At the age of fourteen, he moved to Sentinel Tower, to live under the care of his uncle and train with the blademarks. His uncle, Wyeth a deeply religious man, inspired him to combine the divine arts with the more martial disciplines of the blademarks, a fighting style that is unique, as far as Calden knows.
Thanks to his uncle’s efforts, Calden was one of the few from Karrnath that trained with one of Valaes Tairn Warclans. Led by an unorthodox Keeper of the Past, this warclan trained him in the most brutal aspects of Valenar warfare, as well as introduced him to their ancestor worship. Few among them but the Keeper of the Past accepted him, despite any skills he may have learned.
His parents lived long enough to see him off to war, but died of natural causes within a year of each other in 991. His sister inherited most of their estate. By chance or fate, in Olerune 994 his company was rotated off the front lines, and he was back at Sentinel Tower to await reassignment. Elidin, wanting someone he could rely on, sent him to investigate reports of an unusual tower on the borders of Breland and Cyre.
By late 996, Calden had left the blademarks. The end of the war had lessened their need, and besides, garrison duty was not to his liking. Instead, he served with the Sentinel Marshals, engaging in a friendly rivalry with Kava d’Tharashk , of House Tharashk. Unlike most d’Denieth heirs, including his sister, Calden has little interest in House politics or maneuvering, instead caring only about the job… even if that means working with House Tharashk.
Calden stands roughly six feet tall, his dark black hair just brushing his collar, with dark green eyes. He wears functional clothing, and functional armor, disdaining any trapping or symbols his name would entitle him to. His only adornment is a simple armband, embossed with the campaign pins and ribbons he was awarded during his service with the Blademarks. Even this, though, he saves for formal functions at the House enclave. He is provided with a small room while at the enclave, as are all Marshals, but while in pursuit of a mark he has no place to call his home save the inns of House Ghallanda. He is tanned by sun and weather, and well built as befits a soldier.
